Potential traffic delays on and off campus during early October

To: UCSC Community

From: Larry Pageler, Director of Transportation and Parking Services

Due to a water-main construction project, traffic is expected to be slow on Heller Drive on the west side of campus on Wednesday, October 1, and Thursday, October 2. On these days, traffic in that area is expected to be reduced to a single lane. Additional construction activities during the next three weeks may require intermittent lane closures resulting in potential traffic delays.

In addition, Santa Cruz Public Works is preparing for a resurfacing project on a section of Western Drive between Empire Grade and Meder Street. That section of the road is expected to be closed to traffic through Friday, October 10.

For updated information on roadway conditions throughout Wednesday, please see the information provided below.

Current status

Heller Drive: Campus commuters should anticipate traffic delays along Heller Drive near the Porter College entrance road between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday, October 1, and on Thursday, October 2, with intermittent construction continuing over the next several weeks. Installation of a new water main on the west side of campus requires trenching within uphill lane of the roadway. Flaggers will be present during the construction period to provide traffic control through the one-lane section of Heller. As always, drivers and bicyclists are urged to use caution when traveling through construction areas.

Western Drive: The Santa Cruz City Public Works Department has begun work restoring and resurfacing Western Drive between Empire Grade (High Street) and Meder Street. This project is expected to continue through Friday, October 10, when repaving should be completed. During this time, this section of Western Drive will be closed to through traffic.

Please check this this web page regularly throughout the day, especially when preparing to leave campus, for information about traffic on campus. If there is additional information on roadway conditions and traffic delays, it will be posted here.
