Nancy Cox-Konopelski, director of UCSC's Academic Excellence (ACE) Program, was among six outstanding community women honored by the Santa Cruz County Women's Commission at an awards ceremony on Saturday, September 20, in Watsonville.
Cox-Konopelski received a 2008 Trailblazer Award for her work "mentoring young women to pursue math and science careers" and as an organizer of the annual Expanding Your Horizons conference at UCSC.
Expanding Your Horizons brings hundreds of middle and high school girls to UCSC each year for a conference on math and science. Its goals are to encourage young women to study math and science and to let them know about the possibilities for interesting careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (known as the STEM fields).
As director of the ACE Program, Cox-Konopelski provides academic support for students in STEM majors at UCSC.
ACE and Expanding Your Horizons are among a wide range of Enrichment Opportunities in Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics available at UCSC.
