It is my pleasure to announce that Professor David Evan Jones has agreed to provide interim leadership for the Arts Division. I have named Professor Jones to the position of Acting Dean of the Arts Division effective September 16, 2008 through June 30, 2009 or until a new Dean is appointed.
Professor Jones follows Professor Carolyn (Lyndy) Dean as Acting Dean of the Arts Division. Professor Dean will continue her valuable contribution to the Division in the role of Associate Dean of the Arts effective September 16, 2008 through June 30, 2009. I would like to thank Professor Dean for her diligent work as Acting Dean over the past three months. I look forward to her continuing leadership as Associate Dean.
Professor Jones is a member of the Music Department. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Music from the University of California, San Diego. Professor Jones also serves as the Provost of Porter College, a position which he will continue to hold during his tenure as Acting Dean. Professor Jones is a composer/theorist with diverse interests and publications and recordings in chamber music, chamber opera, computer music, world music composition, and computer-assisted composition. Professor Jones has worked extensively in computer music, composing in residence at the Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) in Stockholm, at L'Institut de Recherche et de Cooordination Acoustique/Musique (IRCAM) in Paris, and at Bregman Electronic Music Studio at Dartmouth College (where he co-founded, with Jon Appleton, the Dartmouth graduate program in Electro-Acoustic Music). In his role as an instrumental/vocal composer, Professor Jones has served as Composer in Residence at York University in England and been a featured composer at Texas Christian University. His first chamber opera, Bardos, was staged in 2004 by the Seoul Contemporary Opera Company. His compositions have been recognized by a number of grants and awards.
I am confident that Professor Jones will provide outstanding leadership for the division, and I look forward to working with him in this capacity.
The current search for a new Dean of the Arts is in its final stages. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Arts Dean search committee for their excellent work during this past year.
