Recreation Department offers new summer youth program

The UCSC Recreation Department is known for its spectacular adventure outings, interesting classes, and fun day trips. The department is expanding its service to the community by offering a Teen Adventure Camp and a Youth Explorer Camp. The goal is to provide an opportunity for teens and pre-teens to experience the joys and magic of all that Santa Cruz has to offer. This is a place to meet new friends, learn new skills, and have fun.

The Teen Adventure Camp is a five-day backpacking overnight camp in the central Sierras open to 12- to 14-year-olds. The Teen Camp is geared toward teaching invaluable outdoor, mountaineering, interpersonal, and leadership skills while having fun in a spectacular setting. Campers will spend two days backpacking in the backcountry near Alpine Lake. There will be a maximum of 10 campers with two staff. The "hard" gear, such as a backpack, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stove, and tent, is provided by the program. The price is $525, and scholarships are available. The dates are July 28-August 1.

The Youth Explorer Camp is a five-day, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. day camp where 9- to 11-year-olds have the time of their lives swimming, hiking, rock climbing on our mobile climbing wall, learning natural history, developing their leadership styles, and challenging themselves. The focus is to provide safe, fun, and educational activities to encourage personal growth and to have an awesome summer. Every day the campers will leave UCSC to embark on an adventure to places such as the Long Marine Lab, local beaches, the UCSC Arboretum, and local parks. The price is $340 per week, and campers can sign up for all four weeks. The dates are:

  • Week 1: June 23-27

  • Week 2: July 7-11

  • Week 3: July 21-25

  • Week 4: August 4-8
