AFSCME strike on June 4-5

To: UC Santa Cruz Faculty and Staff

From: David S. Kliger, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

The union representing Service and Patient Care Technical employees (AFSCME) has announced its intention to conduct a UC systemwide strike on Wednesday and Thursday, June 4-5. I am hopeful that contract negotiations will be resolved soon. In the meantime, I ask for your cooperation to ensure we maintain our commitments to our students and the campus community in the event of a strike. I am sending out this message well in advance of the anticipated strike dates, so that you can plan accordingly.

It is essential that all employees (including non-represented and all bargaining unit employees) understand their rights, and the obligations of the University, when considering whether to participate in a strike or honor a picket line. To that end, we have posted a web site that contains important information for all employees. The Public Information Office will post transportation, on-campus dining, and other strike-related updates to this site as that information becomes available:

www.ucsc.edu/news_events/strike/afscme_06-08/

The following web site has the most complete information from UCOP regarding negotiations:

Strike-day information will also be available on the campus's communication hotline (459-INFO), and will be forwarded to KZSC Radio (88.1 FM) for broadcast.

If you have any questions, please contact the campus Labor Relations Office at 459-2017.
