Death of UCSC Student

To: UCSC Community

From: Felicia McGinty, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

With sadness, I write to inform you that the campus has learned that

Michael C. Wilson, a College Eight undergraduate, died unexpectedly last week. He was 21 years old.

Majoring in mathematics, Michael was a fourth-year UCSC student who was planning to graduate in 2008. In addition to succeeding in his academic endeavors, Michael worked diligently to support UCSC's underrepresented students.

Michael was a founding member of the Math Diversity Alliance student organization, and is remembered as a senior who always found time to advise underclassmen on their academic life. Michael's ability to clearly communicate difficult subjects, coupled with his sense of humor, made him a special leader of the Math Diversity Alliance organization. He was also a member of the campus chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.

Michael's family wishes to inform the campus that he will be remembered at a private service later this month in his hometown of Berkeley, California.

Please join me in extending our most heartfelt condolences to Michael's family and all in the campus community who love and care for him.
