Arts Leadership

To: UCSC Community

From: David S. Kliger, Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor

Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to announce that Professor Margaret (Maggie) Morse has agreed to provide interim leadership for the Arts Division. I have named Professor Morse to the position of Associate Dean for the Arts, effective July 1, 2007. In addition, Acting Chancellor Blumenthal will be submitting a proposal for approval by the UC Board of Regents that Professor Morse be named Acting Dean of the Arts for the 2007-08 academic year.

Professor Morse received both her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from UC Berkeley. She studies cultural change through media in a shifting focus from film to television and video to new media and digital culture. The cultural forms she has addressed range from television news, graphics and sports to video aerobics, malls and freeways, what food cyborgs eat and the meaning of home in the age of privatized mobility. For more information on Professor Morse please see: http://film.ucsc.edu/people/bio/morse.html

The current search for a new Dean of the Arts is closing without a selected candidate. This means we will begin a new search for a permanent Dean this fall. I will be providing further information regarding the new search in the near future. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the search committee for their diligent work during this past year.

I am confident that Professor Morse will provide outstanding leadership for the division.
