Bird researcher Brian Walton dies

To: UCSC Community

From: Acting Chancellor Blumenthal

I am sorry to report that we have learned that Brian Walton, who served as

the coordinator of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group for the

past 31 years, died this past Friday.

Under Brian's leadership, the UCSC research group was instrumental in the

restoration of the peregrine falcon on the West Coast. Nearly extinct two

decades earlier, the peregrine was removed from the endangered species list

in 1999 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Please join me in extending our deepest condolences to Brian's family and

to his many friends and colleagues, on and off campus.

For more information about Brian's career and a memorial event the family

is planning, please see an obituary distributed today by our Public

Information Office:http://press.ucsc.edu/text.asp?pid=1401
