UCSC Arboretum holds annual Spring Plant Sale on Saturday, April 21

The Arboretum's sale is held in conjunction with the spring plant sale of the California Native Plant Society. Both sales are open early (from 10 a.m. to 12 noon) to members of the Arboretum Associates and the California Native Plant Society, and to the general public from noon to 4 p.m.

The sale will include a large batch of a new hybrid monkey flower (Mimulus 'Ruby Slippers') that sold out at last year's Fall Plant Sale. Developed at the Arboretum, 'Ruby Slippers' has bright ruby-red flowers that bloom much of the year on upright branches.

Other plants available at the sale include Banksia grandis, imported by the Arboretum from Australia, which bears its flowers in striking 3- to 10-inch cylinders made up of hundreds of individual flowers; Lilium lancifolium, a tiger lily from Asia; Leucospermum species (pincushion proteas) from South Africa; Iris douglasiana 'Santa Lucia,' a deep purple native iris selected by the Arboretum; Iris longipetala, another native iris; and various fragrant native sages.

Many of the Arboretum's plants are drought-resistant and will still thrive and flower during a drought once they are established. A complete list of the plants that will be on sale has been posted on the Arboretum's web site.

For more information about the sale, contact the UCSC Arboretum at (831) 427-2998. The Arboretum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day. Norrie's Gifts is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
