Rep. Maxine Waters to address King Convocation Tuesday

To: Campus Community

From: Acting Chancellor George Blumenthal

I wish to invite you to join me at UCSC's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Convocation on February 20, featuring Congresswoman Maxine Waters. Rep. Waters has been in the forefront of efforts to guarantee voting rights, rebuild New Orleans following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and encourage congressional oversight of our nation's policy in Iraq. The event will be at 7 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium, 307 Church

Street, in downtown Santa Cruz.

Three buses will bring students to the convocation. All buses will begin at the East Gate/Main Entrance, then loop the campus before leaving the West Gate and heading to the Civic. The buses will leave the East Gate at 6, 6:15, and 6:30 p.m. Buses will be back in position at the Civic for a 9 p.m. pickup after the event, with a final bus on standby for any remaining students.

Bringing together the UCSC and local communities, the convocation celebrates the life and dream of the late civil rights leader by reaffirming the human ideals of freedom, justice, community, and opportunity. I would like to thank the convocation planning committee for arranging such an outstanding program. The convocation, which is free and open to the public, is funded by the Chancellor's Office and produced by the Special Events Office.
