We write to inform you of a leadership transition in the Arts Division. Edward Houghton, who has admirably served as Dean of the Division of the Arts for the past 15 years, will return to teaching and research at the conclusion of the current academic year. Dean Houghton has served with tremendous distinction during his long tenure, overseeing the development of a number of new programs for our students and state-of-the-art facilities for the teaching, exhibition, and performance of the arts at UCSC. We are all indebted to Dean Houghton for his outstanding service. We hope you will join us in thanking Dean Houghton for his dedication; further information regarding a formal acknowledgement and celebration of Dean Houghton's service will be forthcoming.
After consultation with the Arts divisional leadership and others, we have authorized a national search for Dean Houghton's successor. The search is being widely advertised, and we welcome the nominations of qualified candidates and their applications. The position of Dean is of vital importance to the future of the Arts Division and to the campus as a whole. It is in all of our interests to identify the best candidates for this position. We, therefore, encourage you to speak with your colleagues on campus, in the UC system, and beyond in an effort to help us develop a strong candidate pool.
If you, or others you know, are interested in applying, application materials should be submitted as described in the position announcement. A copy of the position announcement is posted on the Academic Human Resources web site and can also be found at http://ahr.ucsc.edu/ArtDean.pdf. Initial
screening of applications will begin March 9, 2007; this position is open until filled.
We encourage your active involvement in this recruitment. Please contact any of the search committee members for additional information or to discuss potential nominations.
