New on-campus apartments for 651 UC Santa Cruz students will be on display during an open house and tour for local government officials, the campus community, and the news media. Students will occupy the housing when the fall quarter begins later this month.
When and where: 9:30 a.m. to noon, September 9, beginning with a 30-minute presentation by Jean Marie Scott, associate vice chancellor for Colleges and University Housing Services, at the Porter/Kresge Colleges Community Room.
Background: The new apartment complexes will serve students at four (Cowell, Stevenson, Porter, and Kresge) of the campus's 10 residential colleges. The design of the housing ranges from one-bedroom units to apartments designed for six or seven residents.
Apartment living is an increasingly popular option for students at UCSC and nationwide. The housing will mean the residential colleges of Cowell, Stevenson, and Porter-which until now have contained residence halls only-will have apartments; the all-apartment Kresge College will add beds. The 651 new units are broken down as follows: Cowell, 185; Stevenson, 136; Porter, 234; and Kresge, 96.
Construction began in 2002 and was completed this summer. In addition to the no-commute convenience of living on campus, the furnished apartments also boast high-speed Internet access and cable access, community rooms, and laundry facilities.
Tour parking: Parking will be available during the tour at Porter/Kresge Colleges. If you need a parking permit, please call UCSC's Public Information Office at (831) 459-2495.
