Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood announced today (Monday, November 10) that Michael M. Hutchison has been appointed as interim dean of the UC Santa Cruz Social Sciences Division, effective December 1.

Hutchison, a UCSC alumnus, is one of the world's leading experts in international finance and the Japanese economy, frequently consulting with central banks around the world. His recent research focuses on financial instability in Japan, the costs of financial crises in developing economies, and the effectiveness of central bank foreign-exchange market intervention.
"This is a wonderful opportunity," Hutchison said. "Since my undergraduate days here, I have held a deep commitment to the excellence that characterizes education at UC Santa Cruz. Hutchison joined the faculty at UC Santa Cruz in 1985. He is currently a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, a research associate of Economic Policy Research Unit (University of Copenhagen), and a research fellow of the Hamburg Institute of International Economics.
Coauthor of two recent books on the Japanese financial system: Financial Policy and Central Banking in Japan (MIT Press, 2000) and The Political Economy of Japanese Monetary Policy (MIT Press, 1997), Hutchison also coedited the book Fiscal Aspects of European Monetary Integration (Cambridge University Press, 1999). His recent research has appeared in the Economic Journal; Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking; Journal of International Economics; and Scandinavian Journal of Economics, among other journals. He is an executive editor of the Journal of Asian Economies.
Michael Hutchison received his Ph.D. in economics (1983) from the University of Oregon and his B.A. in economics (1976) from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He has worked at the Bank for International Settlements, and had visiting appointments with the Bank of Japan, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Bank of Sweden, and other institutions. He has also taught at the University of Gothenburg, the Copenhagen Business School, the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, and the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California.
Hutchison's appointment follows the move of former dean Martin M. Chemers to interim campus provost and executive vice chancellor.
