Increasing campus COVID-19 testing accessibility and requirements

To: UC Santa Cruz Community

From: Sarah Latham, Vice Chancellor, Business and Administrative Services

Frequent, free, and easy COVID-19 testing is a critical component in containing the virus’s spread. We are thankful for those in our UC Santa Cruz community who have been regularly getting tested. Participation in the asymptomatic testing program continues to be a cornerstone to our campus recovery and resiliency plans.

This is an update to the October 1, 2020 announcement regarding the campus asymptomatic testing program that was launched to support campus public health. Following several very successful weeks during which many students and employees participated in the testing, we are pleased to now be able to expand the frequency of the testing available to the members of our campus community. These changes are effective November 10, 2020.

  • Students (undergraduate and graduate) who are living in university housing or are on-site for classes, research, employment or other activities are required to have twice weekly COVID-19 tests.
    • Instructions for participating in this mandatory testing can be found online.
  • Students living off-campus in Santa Cruz County, even if they are not accessing campus for other purposes, may volunteer to have twice weekly COVID-19 tests.
    • Instructions for how to access this voluntary testing can be found online.
  • Live-in Residential staff may volunteer to have twice weekly COVID-19 tests.
    • Instructions for how to access this voluntary testing can be found online.
  • Other populations who are on-site, including our faculty and staff who are accessing campus locations, may volunteer to have weekly COVID-19 tests.
    • Instructions for how to access this voluntary testing can be found online.

Note that population requirements and frequencies are subject to change as conditions and/or state and local guidance changes.

“On-site" refers to any UCSC owned or operated facility where students or employees come to live, work or otherwise engage in programs, services and activities; includes UCSC sponsored programs, meetings, field research, etc., hosted at off-site venues.

The information outlined above is for asymptomatic testing. Students who are symptomatic or who have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive person should outreach to the Student Health Center. Employees who are symptomatic or have been exposed should outreach to their primary care physician.

Campus launches new COVID-19 dashboard

UC Santa Cruz has launched a new COVID-19 dashboard to provide a regularly updated status on COVID-19. This data will help inform decisions about on-campus operations and activities.

Thank you to every member of the Slug community for your support of our testing program, as well as the other key mitigations we have in place to promote community health and well-being.  More information on our COVID-19 response and recovery is available online.
