How to stay informed
When protest activities on the UC Santa Cruz campus affect traffic or university operations, information updates and known impacts will be posted here. In addition to updating this page, if necessary the Public Affairs Office will also:
UC Santa Cruz update
Friday, March 6
8 am: Campus is open and all classes and activities are taking place as scheduled.
Thursday, March 5
7:15 pm: Both campus entrances are open. Santa Cruz Metro transit buses are traveling to and across campus. Night shuttle service is operating.
6:15 pm: Both campus entrances are open to through traffic in both directions. Protestors are gathered in High Street, west of Bay Street. High Street traffic is being diverted via Bay, Meder, and Western Drive. Motorists are advised to drive with caution due to people in the roadway.
5:15 pm: The west entrance is now open with traffic flowing freely. Protestors are marching from Hagar and Coolidge drives to the main gate, impeding cars leaving campus.
3:45 pm: Traffic diversions around the intersection of Bay and High streets have been removed. However access through the main entrance is restricted.
3:30 pm: The College Nine/Ten dining hall will remain open until 7 pm.
12:30 pm: College Eight dining hall will close at 2 pm; College Nine/Ten dining hall will remain open as long as possible.
10:25 am: Joe's Pizza and Subs at Quarry Plaza is now open.
8:45 am: College 8 dining hall is now open.
7:45 am:
- Access to campus is blocked. People are advised not to come to campus.
- Traffic is being diverted away from the main entrance at Bay and High streets.
- Metro bus service is not running on campus.
- On-campus shuttle and bike shuttle service is suspended. Disability van service is available by request.
- The Cowell Student Health Center is open today for scheduled and walk-in appointments.
- The College 9/10 dining hall is open with limited service.
- The Office of Admissions is not conducting campus tours today.
- The McHenry and Science Libraries are closed.
- Porter Slug Cafe is open.
7:25 am: Traffic is being diverted away from the Bay and High intersection.
6:55 am: Porter Slug Cafe will open at 7 am.
6:45 am: The University Library (McHenry and Science & Engineering) will not open this morning. Libraries are expected to open for all services on Friday, March 6.
6 am: At this time, College 9/10 Dining Hall will be the only dining hall open. Doors will open at 7:15 am with light service.
5:30 am: Access to campus is blocked. Individuals are advised to not come to campus.
5 am: Access to campus is restricted. Coolidge and Hagar drives are blocked at the intersection. West entrance also remains blocked.
4:45 am: Campus main gate is open. West entrance blocked by protestors.
4:30 am: Campus is open.
Wednesday, March 4
5:40 pm: Marchers have dispersed.
4:50 pm: Marchers are walking down Hagar Drive blocking both lanes in the vicinity of the Village, headed toward Coolidge Drive causing traffic delays. Motorists are advised to proceed with caution.
2 pm: Message from Staff HR and Academic Personnel provides guidance to campus employees regarding options for Thursday.
10 am: All campus operations are normal. Check back later in the day for updates regarding expected protest disruptions on Thursday. Campus tours scheduled for Thursday, March 5 have been rescheduled.
Monday, March 2
4 pm: A small group is walking on Hagar and McLaughlin drives, also near Science Hill. Traffic is affected but able to get by. Motorists are advised to watch for pedestrians in the road and drive carefully
12:45 pm: After a noon rally, marchers have left Quarry Plaza and are proceeding up Hagar Drive.
Noon: Campus tours scheduled for Thursday, March 5, have been cancelled. Admissions staff are notifying individuals with reservations and are making other arrangements.
8 am: Campus is open and all classes and activities are taking place as planned. This page will be updated as events warrant.
