Campus status related to March 1 protests

Both entrances are open. Cars and buses can drive onto campus.

Campus status: Friday, March 2

  • 6 am: Both campus entrance remain open. Thank you for your patience yesterday.

Thursday, March 1

  • 8 pm: Protesters have departed both entrances, which are now open to incoming and outgoing traffic again. Bus service has been restored.
  • 6 pm: Protesters have departed from the West Entrance, which is open to incoming and outgoing traffic again.
  • 4 pm: Traffic detours are scheduled to be cancelled at 6 p.m. at the intersections of High and Cardiff Place, Bay and Meder streets, and Western Drive and Empire Grade. Vehicle access to campus remains blocked.
  • 2 pm: Vehicles may leave campus but vehicle traffic is still being prevented from entering campus. Dining Services is providing service at the College Nine/10 dining hall until at least 6 pm. The College Eight/Oakes dining hall is now closed as are cafes. Childcare services are open until 5:30 pm. McHenry and the Science & Engineering libraries are closed. More detailed information is available on the specific web pages to the left.
  • 11 am: Traffic on campus remains restricted. Dining Services are providing service at the College Eight and College Nine/10 dining halls and some cafes. Childcare services are open. McHenry and the Science & Engineering libraries are closed.
  • 9 am: Traffic is being rerouted at the intersections of High Street and Cardiff Place, Bay and Meder streets and Western Drive and Empire Grade.
  • 8 am: Chancellor Blumenthal and Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor Galloway urge all faculty to recognize that today's protest is preventing many students from attending classes at their normal time and place. They ask faculty to make accommodations, as appropriate, for students who are unable, through no fault of their own, to attend class.
  • 7:45 am: The intersection of Bay Street and High Street is closed. Please avoid the area if possible. The Student Health Center will be open as scheduled today. 
  • 6:30 am: People continue to gather at the intersection of Coolidge and Hagar and also at the West Entrance, blocking vehicular access to the campus. Students, staff, and faculty should not attempt to drive cars onto campus. Buses are unloading university passengers at stops near the main entrance. The dining services status page has been updated. 
  • 5:30 am: Status from 4:30 report is unchanged. In addition, when Santa Cruz Metro buses begin service to UCSC later this morning, they will not drive onto the campus. Buses will unload university passengers at stops near the main entrance.
  • 4:30 am: People have gathered at the intersection of Coolidge and Hagar and also at the West Entrance, blocking vehicular access to the campus. Students, staff, and faculty should not attempt to drive cars onto campus.

In a message to the UCSC community, Chancellor Blumenthal and Campus Provost Galloway alert members of the campus community to a "day of action" called for Thursday, March 1, and ask that people who choose to participate in a protest do so safely and in a manner that respects the rights of other members of the community.
