Cowell Dining Hall to close temporarily for seismic upgrades, enhanced options

An architect's rendering of the view from the new dining hall.

The Cowell Dining Hall will be out of service and under construction from May 3, 2008, through March 2009 to improve dining options and to make required seismic upgrades.

When the project is completed at the end of winter quarter 2009, Cowell diners will find a new food counter, a remodeled dining hall, and expanded choices.

A renovated kitchen and food counter will offer more made-to-order serving stations, a wood-fired pizza oven, and a Mongolian grill. Open-air patio dining will also be available.

During the construction closure, all those who normally eat in the Cowell Dining Hall may dine in any open dining hall--as is always the case.

In addition, to ensure prompt service, especially at peak meal times, the Cultural Center at Merrill College will be open for lunch and dinner during the week (Monday through Friday lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Monday through Thursday dinner from 6-8 p.m.). Dining Services will be preparing fresh organic specialties at Merrill in addition to classic favorites.

The Crown/Merrill Dining Commons will be open on its regular schedule: continuous dining Monday through Friday and late-night dining Tuesday through Saturday.

In addition to the Cowell Dining Hall, other spaces at Cowell that will be out of service through March 2009 include the Cowell Coffee Shop, the Fireside Lounge, and the Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery.
