Map sense tells elephant seals to head ‘home’

UC Santa Cruz researchers found that female elephant seals use an internal map sense to know their distance from breeding beaches and allocate extra time if they have farther to travel. Each year, pregnant female elephant seals take an approximately 240-day trek over 10,000 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean before returning to give birth within five days of arrival.
