As the slug rises: Once subversive, UCSC’s beloved mascot turns 25
This year marks the 25th anniversary of UC Santa Cruz’s famous banana slug mascot, a once-subversive symbol on campus. This month, a former chancellor and various alumni looked back on the days when the fate of this character hung on a slender thread of slime.

UCSC aims for zero waste in student move-out
UCSC, for the past few years, has been holding “Zero-Waste Move Out” events across the campus, making it much easier for students to deposit household goods, electronics, toiletries, canned food and other materials in collection bins. It’s all part of UCSC’s efforts to make the campus zero waste in 2020.

In Memoriam: George Malloch
George Malloch Jr., who served as a trustee of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation from 1990 to 2002, died on May 21 in Germany. A resident of Brookdale in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mr. Malloch was president of the foundation from 1997-1999.

Grupo Folklórico Los Mejicas honored at 39th annual performance
Grupo Folklórico Los Mejicas was presented with two awards of recognition during the troupe’s 39th annual spring concert including Watsonville Mayor Daniel Dodge proclaiming June 3 “Grupo Folklórico Los Mejicas Day” in Watsonville.

Sociology department chair Craig Reinarman’s research was cited in War on Drugs: The Report of the Global Commission on Drug Policy. The report called the war on drugs a failure and received worldwide attention when it was released last week.
