Ecological Society of America names Dan Costa a lifetime fellow
Dan Costa, distinguished professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and director of UC Santa Cruz’s Institute of Marine Sciences, has been named a 2024 Fellow of the Ecological Society of America.

May 11 is “Clean Up Day” throughout Santa Cruz County
Students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in Santa Cruz County “Clean Up Day” on May 11. Organized by Trash Talkers, the goal is to make Santa Cruz County the cleanest county in the state. UC Santa Cruz students partner with community groups for a service-learning spring break
On March 23, fifteen students from UC Santa Cruz decided to redefine the essence of spring break. Opting out of traditional activities, they immersed themselves in a week-long critical service-learning experience, partnering with environmental and economic justice organizations in Watsonville as part of the Colleges Nine and John R. Lewis Alternative Spring Break program.

UC Leave options expanded to include protected time off for reproductive loss
Beginning Jan. 1, 2024, UC’s leave options expanded to provide eligible employees with up to five days of protected leave following a reproductive loss. This change aligns with California legislation that became effective Jan. 1, 2024.

The Physics Department has been honored by the American Physical Society (APS) for improving undergraduate physics education. At its April meeting, APS announced UC Santa Cruz as one of just three universities nationwide whose physics departments share in this year’s award.

UC Santa Cruz researchers’ tool creates ‘synthetic’ images of cells for enhanced microscopy analysis
UC Santa Cruz researchers have developed a method to use an image generation AI model to create realistic images of single cells, which are then used as “synthetic data” to train an AI model to better carry out single cell-segmentation.
