Alumna Kathryn Sullivan (Cowell ’73, Earth sciences)—who was the first American woman to walk in space, the first woman to reach the deepest point of the ocean floor, and the only person ever to do both—was recently enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Washington, D.C.

Five UC Santa Cruz projects won Climate Action Grant funding, providing millions of dollars to support tackling some of California's toughest climate change challenges through innovative research and community engagement.

STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE
In its second year, Transforming Futures awarded scholarship stipends to 12 students (double the amount of its inaugural year).

With the generous support of donors, UC Santa Cruz’s Institute for Social Transformation funded 12 students to pursue internships over the summer through the Transforming Futures program.

Graduate student Elena Losada, who studies processes of socio-spatial change, like urbanization and migration, was the winner of the 2022 Jessica Roy Memorial Award.

UC Santa Cruz Alumni Awards

Seven alumni will be presented with awards for demonstrating outstanding professional achievements, making distinct contributions to society, providing impactful contributions to UC Santa Cruz, and embodying the values and spirit of the university.

Alumnus Kevin Lunzalu, co-founder of the youth-led conservation organization Kenyan Youth Biodiversity Network, received an award from the Global Environment Facility for his work to significantly reduce plastic waste ending up in the ocean.

Members of the UCSC Black Men’s Alliance alumni group, which mentors students and helps them launch careers, found that a trip to Ghana not only got them in touch with their African roots but also deepened their connections with each other.

Santa Cruz social worker and alumna Melissa LaHommedieu uses her lived experience to help others find housing and navigate the foster-care system after breaking the cycle of poverty and abuse that marked her early life.
