Students get creative

Slugworks, a new creatorspace in the Jack Baskin Engineering building, is full of equipment and machines for all types of crafting, metalworking, fabrication, woodworking, and more—but fostering a collaborative community within the space may be the most important tool there.

The UC Santa Cruz Alumni Association recently honored seven alumni at the Alumni Awards Celebration, recognizing and honoring alumni who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievements, made distinct contributions to society, provided impactful contributions to UC Santa Cruz, and who embody the values and spirit of the university. Health care without stigma

Alumna Nomsa Khalfani co-leads Essential Access Health, a nonprofit with a mission of advancing health equity and promoting quality sexual and reproductive health care for all.

The UC Santa Cruz Foundation elected six new trustees—including several alumni—who are established leaders across a range of industries, from fiber optics and scientific operations to media, arts, and community service.

STUDENT SUCCESS INITIATIVE

Bryant Miguel aka Rip Florence (Merrill ’24, sociology) is an artist, collaborator, connector, and community builder. Miguel is a recipient of the Josh Alper Scholarship.

Empowering students making an impact

The Josh Alper Scholarship, established in memory of alumnus and former University Library staff member Josh Alper, is awarded to students like Bryant Miguel (pictured)—those with financial need who volunteer and make an impact in the community.

Opening career options

Student Leslie Salgado always knew she wanted to work with kids. This summer, she spent three months interning at Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services thanks to the donor-funded program Transforming Futures, which awarded scholarship stipends to allow students to pursue unpaid internships.
