Those who attended the naming ceremony received souvenir T-shirts that included one of John Lewis's most famous sayings.

With a donor-provided naming gift, College Ten will become John R. Lewis College in spring 2022—and the campus is committing to beginning the hard work to live up to the "extraordinary honor and responsibility" of naming the living-and-learning community for the late congressman and civil rights icon.

Generosity was out in force at UC Santa Cruz’s sixth annual Giving Day, with 3,056 donors kicking in more than $629,414, which surpassed last year’s $600,000 figure.

Burney Le Boeuf, now a professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC, summarizes the findings of more than 50 years of elephant seal research in a new book, Elephant Seals: Pushing the Limits on Land and at Sea (Cambridge University Press, November 2021).

In a new book chronicling more than 50 years of research, Professor Emeritus Burney Le Boeuf summarizes the findings of the UC Santa Cruz elephant seal research program, one of the longest-running studies of any animal.

Egill Bjarnason, journalist and Soc Doc alumnus, explains the big history of his native Iceland in a "joyously peculiar book."

Rise Together has a unique, shared leadership model. Its circle of leaders work closely together to set goals and priorities for funding allocations. Many of its leaders are also beneficiaries of Rise Together grants.

Five influential UCSC alumni have joined Rise Together, a socially conscious local philanthropic movement.

UC Santa Cruz is working to retain students in underrepresented groups in STEM majors by building community and providing early field-research opportunities.

UC Santa Cruz welcomed new Arts Division Dean Celine Parreñas Shimizu in July, and the campus also recently appointed Humanities Dean Jasmine Alinder. Both are committed to raising the visibility of the humanities and arts, highlighting their power to deepen critical thinking, heighten sympathetic imagination, and prepare students to lead in a rapidly changing world.
