Joining with 19 leading universities, UC Santa Cruz announced the formation of the Alliance of Hispanic Serving Research Universities, which aims to achieve two key goals at alliance universities by 2030: double the number of Hispanic doctoral students enrolled, and increase the Hispanic professoriate by 20 percent.

Karen Miga, assistant professor of biomolecular engineering, was named one of the 100 most influential people of 2022 by Time magazine for co-leading an international team of scientists to complete the first gapless sequence of the human genome—which will allow researchers to better understand genetic diseases, human diversity, and evolution.

Ricky Le (Rachel Carson ’99, politics)

As a first-gen undergraduate, Ricky Le wasn’t sure he belonged in higher education. UCSC mentors encouraged him to participate in the UC in Washington program, sparking a passion for politics and ultimately a prominent career in Washington, D.C.

Sara Matthews Scholarship

Three international students received this year’s Sara Matthews Scholarship, awarded annually to help with educational costs.

Alumni networks can prove to be invaluable connections. Three UC Santa Cruz graduates recently had that experience when they came together to help each other.

Mario Galdamez graduated from UCSC in 2006 with degrees in politics and Latin American and Latino studies.

Alumnus Mario Galdamez faced discouragement over even applying to college. But he knew that with hard work and determination, he would fulfill his dreams of higher education and, one day, be able to encourage students in similar situations.
