An outbreak of kelp-eating sea urchins along the Central Coast, leading to a significant reduction in the region’s kelp forests, was caused mostly by sea urchins coming out from their hiding places rather than an increase in their population, according to a new study—findings that could help restore decimated kelp forests.

Fifteen researchers at UCSC are working on the California Conservation Genomics Project, the first of its kind in the field of conservation genomics. The project aims to create a comprehensive genomic dataset representative of the state’s biodiversity.

Essential to student success, the Lionel Cantú Queer Resource Center is a strong and active community where “folks have claimed, reclaimed, and proclaimed their voices.”
