Princeton Review has ranked UC Santa Cruz as the No. 3 green college in the nation, a testament to the campus’s longstanding commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

Burney Le Boeuf, now a professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at UCSC, summarizes the findings of more than 50 years of elephant seal research in a new book, Elephant Seals: Pushing the Limits on Land and at Sea (Cambridge University Press, November 2021).

UC Santa Cruz emerita professor of literature Karen Tei Yamashita received the 2021 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from The National Book Foundation, joining such literary luminaries as Maxine Hong Kingston, Toni Morrison, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Walter Mosley.

Constanza Romero (Porter ’85, theater arts), widow and executor of the estate of Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright August Wilson, is keeping his legacy alive, saying his work chronicling Black life in the 20th century is more important than ever.

Dr. MarkAlain Déry (Kresge ’93, human biology), an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist in New Orleans, has been testing for COVID-19,  promoting vaccinations, and analyzing news on the virus through the filter of social, economic, and racial justice.

Problems with bias in criminal justice, hiring, ranking, search, news, and more have created an explosion of interest in ethics and algorithms. Computer scientists at UC Santa Cruz are tackling these and other sensitive issues of big data, artificial intelligence, and ethics in technology.
