Fast thinking and teamwork help keep the campus community safe during the devastating Lightning Complex fires.

With the wildfire coming within a mile of campus, over a thousand students, staff, and faculty were evacuated from their homes on campus and in the surrounding communities, and some have already lost their homes. Click below if you would like to give help.

Late last week, the wildfire sweeping through the Santa Cruz Mountains forced us to evacuate campus, a first in our 55-year history. This recent crisis—combined with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic—both showed the campus community's resilience and will necessarily affect some of our planning for the fall. A 15,000-gallon reserve water tank and sprinklers helped save the Whale Point Research Cabin as wildfire burned across Big Creek Natural Reserve.
Fire preparedness helped firefighters save structures at Big Creek Natural Reserve from the fast-moving Dolan Fire.
