In Memoriam—Chris Lockwood
Christopher Lockwood, an engineer with University of California Observatories for the past 10 years, died of a heart attack on February 4 in Santa Cruz. He was 49 years old.

In Memoriam—William Shipley
William Shipley, one of the first faculty hired at UC Santa Cruz, died January 20. He came to UCSC in 1966 to found the linguistics program, which he led as chair until 1980.

As you probably know, Gov. Brown has proposed a $500 million cut to the UC system for fiscal year 2011-12. I expect that our share will be about 6 percent, or about $31 million.
