COVID Chronicles

Volume 5, April 2021

Hello UC Santa Cruz community,

Spring has arrived on campus, literally and figuratively. A string of 80-degree days at the start of the month jump-started the dormant wildflowers, and everything looks to be coming to life at once. Our spirits are also in bloom, as our governor has now announced that pandemic restrictions may be lifted statewide by mid-June if the COVID

caseload remains low and vaccine availability stays high. This is obviously exciting news that we have been patiently awaiting.

I briefed our campus community recently on a host of COVD-related topics — what to expect this quarter instruction wise, how many students we’ll have in campus housing, and to be aware of our still evolving plans for fall. We are still planning in pencil, because while I am an optimist by nature, I am a realist by practice, and we have seen too many ups and downs with this pandemic to declare that we are now out of the woods. Expect more communications in the coming weeks and months detailing what fall will look like for those returning to campus, for those who will be coming to campus when possible and working or studying remotely at other times, and for those who will remain remote full time.

In the interim, I am happy to pass along to you this latest edition of COVID Chronicles, our e-newsletter series intended to keep our extended community updated and uplifted during these unprecedented times. Learn how our health center has had to pivot to provide services through the pandemic, how our student testing-site kiosk attendants have gone above and beyond to help keep campus healthy, and why one pandemics expert — who we are proud to call an alumna — urges vigilance in face of the many COVID-19 variants surfacing.

Until I see you next, stay safe, stay well, and stay connected.
