Eclectic group of graduate students celebrates achievement at East Field
An eclectic group of UCSC graduate students – including nearly 400 master’s degree candidates, and 231 doctoral candidates — were awarded advanced degrees last week in a ceremony that honored determination and hard work. Among the group were 100 students scheduled to complete the UCSC education master’s program by late summer.

As the slug rises: Once subversive, UCSC’s beloved mascot turns 25
This year marks the 25th anniversary of UC Santa Cruz’s famous banana slug mascot, a once-subversive symbol on campus. This month, a former chancellor and various alumni looked back on the days when the fate of this character hung on a slender thread of slime.

UCSC aims for zero waste in student move-out
UCSC, for the past few years, has been holding “Zero-Waste Move Out” events across the campus, making it much easier for students to deposit household goods, electronics, toiletries, canned food and other materials in collection bins. It’s all part of UCSC’s efforts to make the campus zero waste in 2020.

Student Achievement Week closed with the highly anticipated 2011 Undergraduate Academic Achievement, Excellence in Teaching, and Mentoring Awards ceremony and reception. This year’s winner of the prestigious Steck Award is undergraduate astrophysics major Luke Kelley, 23.

Redwood conservation and rock and roll: Conferences keep campus busy in summer
Summer is conference season at UCSC where thousands of newcomers will cross scenic bridges, explore the woods, and take classes. UCSC expects 70 residential conference groups, and 10,000 visitors, from June 19 to August 27.

Solar-powered scoreboard coming to Lower East Field
Wells Fargo Bank is paying for the first permanent outdoor playing field scoreboard in campus history. The $15,000 scoreboard will be solar-powered and a much better fit for the 300 spectators that come to the men’s and women’s intercollegiate soccer matches.

Student Achievement Week: recognizing excellence
UC Santa Cruz will honor a long list of outstanding scholars, visual artists, performers and researchers during the annual Student Achievement Week festivities from May 28 to June 3. This week allows these students to present their work in highly public settings, from an annual print sale to a sciences and engineering poster symposium.

Business Design Competition: high-tech test-grading system designers win top prize
UCSC engineering graduate student Paul Abumov and McMaster University astrophysics graduate Nicolas Petitclerc won the top spot at this year’s Business Design Competition. A patent is pending for their innovative, high-tech test-grading system.

The Carbon Fund Committee has selected nine green-minded projects for funding, ranging from a “green Wharf” project to a regional water use reduction campaign.

Two-wheel commuters take to the road on Bike to Work Day
Participants in Thursday’s Bike To Work celebration ranged from teenagers to AARP members. They took part in an annual event that promotes healthy living, diminishes stress, and cuts down on auto emissions.

Recognizing commitment: picnic highlights staff achievements
A large and appreciative crowd of staff members ate marinated chicken, vied for raffle prizes, and danced to a cheeky song by Cee Lo Green during the annual UCSC Staff Appreciation Barbecue on the East Field.
