I write to pass along the sad news that Peggy Downes Baskin, a lifelong advocate for women’s rights and educational equity, a widely respected professor of political science, and a longtime philanthropic supporter of UC Santa Cruz, passed away Dec. 11.

It saddens me to pass along the news that Rowland Rebele, a longtime Santa Cruz civic leader and philanthropist whose generosity and vision have helped shape modern-day Santa Cruz and our campus, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25.

This fall has been a difficult one, as the impact of the escalating Israel-Hamas conflict has rippled outward to our community and so many others.
