Alumna Nomsa Khalfani honored at inaugural Maternal Health Summit

Dr. Nomsa Khalfani (Kresge ’91, sociology) received the Health Equity Award at the inaugural Maternal Health Summit for her pioneering work to advance maternal health equity across the city. Attendees of the Maternal Health Summit held in Los Angeles included Grammy Award–winning artist and actress Faith Evans, Grammy-nominated artist Halle Bailey, as well as many other leaders and advocates championing maternal health access and equity nationwide.
As Co-CEO of Essential Access Health, Khalfani works to advance reproductive equity and champions sexual and reproductive health care. Essential Access Health takes a multidisciplinary approach to expanding patient-centered care nationwide, combining funding, advocacy, and research with provider training and youth and community education.
Khalfani graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 1991 with a B.A. in sociology. She received an M.A. from Phillips Graduate Institute and a Ph.D. from Capella University, School of Public Service Leadership.
In addition to her role with Essential Access Health, Khalfani serves as the 1st Vice-President of the Los Angeles City Health Commission, Board Chair of Community Asset Development Re-defining Education, and Treasurer of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association.
