Mark Carr: Assistant Professor of Biology

Mark Carr returns to UCSC 21 years after earning his B.A. in biology from College Eight. A marine ecologist, he focuses on nearshore organisms such as reef fishes. Applications of his work include fisheries conservation, the roles of marine reserves, and environmental impact assessment. Carr earned his M.S. at San Francisco State University/Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and his Ph.D. at UC Santa Barbara. At UCSB, he worked as deputy director of the Southern California Education Initiative and the Coastal Marine Institute.

Karen Tei Yamashita Assistant Professor of Literature

Karen Yamashita, a novelist, is the author of Tropic of Orange (1997), Brazil-Maru (1992); and Through the Arc of the Rain Forest (1990), which won the prestigious 1991 American Book Award, presented each year by the Before Columbus Foundation. Yamashita teaches fiction and Asian American literature. Before coming to UCSC, she was in Japan on a fellowship from the Japan Foundation, conducting research on Japan’s Brazilian community. Yamashita holds a B.A. in literature from Carleton College.
