City of Santa Cruz to pilot safety improvements at intersection of Bay and Escalona drives

The intersection of Bay Drive and Escalona Drive is one of the top ten intersection collision locations in the City of Santa Cruz. To improve safety at this intersection, the city will install temporary traffic control measures to eliminate the left turn and through movements on Escalona Drive. The project will also install a speed feedback sign, transverse rumble strips, and additional signage on Bay Drive to reinforce the 25-mph speed limit.
How can I travel through the Bay/Escalona intersection while the pilot is in place?
- Drivers traveling southbound on Bay Drive (away from UCSC) will be able to turn left from Bay Drive to Escalona Drive
- Drivers traveling northbound on Bay Drive (toward UCSC) will not be able to turn left from Bay Drive to Escalona Drive
- Drivers on Escalona Drive will not be able to turn left or drive straight across Bay to stay on Escalona Drive
- Bicyclists on Escalona Drive will be able to travel straight through the intersection to stay on Escalona Drive
- Pedestrian movements will remain the same
What will the project look like?

Timeline
Weather permitting, the pilot project will be installed during the week of October 12, 2026, and will be in place through summer 2027. Traffic counts will be collected to evaluate pilot impacts.
