To support transportation options throughout the community, UC Santa Cruz and BCycle signed a five-year contract in 2023 as part of the e-bike share company’s launch across Santa Cruz County. Our students, faculty, and staff now represent about 80% of BCycle ridership in the region–helping our affiliates get around campus and into the community, reducing traffic, and advancing the campus’s sustainability goals.
UC Santa Cruz was disappointed to learn that BCycle intends to prematurely cancel its contract with the campus.
BCycle cites regional theft and damage to their bikes and docks as the reason for ending the contract, though the vast majority of these issues have not happened at UC Santa Cruz.
BCycle stated it would continue the service only if the campus paid more than what was agreed upon and what campus membership demand actually justifies.
We anticipate that BCycle will remain available on campus through the end of the fall quarter. However, impacts to bike availability and the discounted memberships that had been provided by BCycle are unknown at this time. The campus will provide updates as we learn more.
We will be discussing the impacts with students, faculty, and staff, as well as with leaders from the cities of Santa Cruz and Capitola, and the County of Santa Cruz.
Transportation and Parking Services continues to operate the bike shuttle, along with many other transit programs. We are also exploring additional ways to support students’ transportation needs.
