Expectations for community respect

Dear Campus Community,

UC Santa Cruz is a community built on mutual respect, professionalism, and fairness. In each of our campus roles as students, faculty, and staff, we are presented with opportunities on a daily basis to live those values.

We are deeply concerned that our parking enforcement representatives are experiencing ongoing harassment and mistreatment while carrying out their work. This conduct is inconsistent with our campus values. Our parking enforcement team plays a critical role in maintaining safety, access, and daily operations, and like everyone in our community, they should be treated with courtesy and respect.

We know that no one likes to find a parking citation on their vehicle, and it can be frustrating when that happens. Even so, upholding our shared values is a collective responsibility, and access to campus resources depends on meeting our shared standards of conduct. Our parking enforcement staff do not make the parking rules or set fines; they are only responsible for applying the regulations the university establishes. If you have a concern, question, or suggestion about parking policies or citations, please email TAPS@ucsc.edu.

Harassing, threatening, or abusive behavior towards or by any employee of our campus community violates our Abusive Conduct in the Workplace Policy. This includes bullying or otherwise threatening conduct that is severe, persistent, or pervasive enough to interfere with a person’s ability to work, study, or participate in university activities. Violations of this policy are serious and may lead to consequences under university policy, including the potential loss of parking privileges. Expectations of students are outlined in the Student Code of Conduct, which describes appropriate behavior and the standards that support a safe and respectful learning environment.

Incidents of physical violence, including assault or battery, will be reported to the UCSC PD and may result in policy violations and/or criminal charges against the responsible individual.

The campus community has a responsibility to uphold these standards and support UC Santa Cruz in remaining a place where everyone can work and safely go about their day free from harassment or intimidation.

We encourage anyone who experiences or witnesses abusive conduct to report it using the procedures outlined on the Abusive Conduct in the Workplace website.

Sincerely,
Ed
