Caring for our workplace: alcohol and other drugs (AOD) — annual notice and resources for employees
UC Santa Cruz is committed to a healthy, safe, and professional environment for all employees.
Dear Colleagues,
UC Santa Cruz is committed to a healthy, safe, and professional environment for all employees. Each year, and in keeping with federal Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act/Drug-Free Workplace requirements, we share a brief reminder of expectations and, most importantly, where to find confidential help and education. Our approach is care-first: if you or someone you know needs support, resources are available and we encourage you to reach out.
Our workplace expectations (what to know)
- The University prohibits the unlawful manufacture, distribution, possession, or use of controlled substances and alcohol in the workplace or while conducting University business. Employees must not use illegal substances or misuse legal substances in ways that impair work performance.
- Because UC is a federally funded institution, cannabis (THC) remains prohibited on UC property, at UC events, and while on UC business, even where state law allows adult use.
If you’re worried about safety
If someone is unconscious or in immediate danger, call 9-1-1. On campus, you may also contact the UCSC Police Department non-emergency line (831) 459-2231. Additional helpful contact information can be found online.
Confidential support and education
- Employee Assistance Program (EAP): ComPsych GuidanceResources provides 24/7 live assistance by calling 844-209-0464. Additional resources can be found at guidanceresources.com. EAP provides up to three no-cost assessment & referral sessions per issue, plus short-term counseling and referrals (substance use, mental health, financial/legal, family stressors).
- Your UC medical plan may offer additional counseling or treatment options; contact your plan or Staff Human Resources for assistance navigating benefits.
Policies and more information
- UC Policy on Substance Abuse (applies to employees and students) include standards of conduct and compliance with federal law.
- UCSC CAPM 016.000 – Substance Abuse — campus guidance on compliance with Drug-Free Schools/Workplace Acts and annual notice.
- UC Guidance on Marijuana at UC — UC-wide cannabis prohibition under federal law.
- Federal law requires UCSC to produce a biennial report which describes our AOD program elements, a statement of AOD program goals, and other information. For a copy of this biennial report, please contact vcsas@ucsc.edu
Accountability
Our goal is education, early support, and safety. Violations may result in corrective or disciplinary action consistent with UC policy and applicable collective bargaining agreements; supervisors and Employee & Labor Relations will focus on fair process and access to assistance. If you have questions about this notice or need help connecting to resources, please reach out to Staff Human Resources or contact EAP directly. Taking the first step to seek help, for yourself or a colleague, is a sign of strength, and support is here at UCSC.
With care,
