Additional changes to federal funding
Regardless of these federal decisions, we remain committed to supporting all students, making changes that foster academic success, and providing access to hands-on learning opportunities that deepen the student experience and prepare students for their lives and careers as UC Santa Cruz alumni.
Dear Campus Community,
The U.S. Department of Education announced on Wednesday it would eliminate funding for federal grant programs that support higher education institutions designated as Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs), and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs).
These designations are tied to U.S. Congressional actions in the 1990s and 2000s. UC Santa Cruz was federally recognized as an HSI in 2012 and as an AANAPISI in 2014. Through our partnership with the federal government, we have worked to expand educational opportunities and promote the success of all undergraduate and graduate students through a range of programs. HSI grants have enabled us to redesign curricula, support transfer students in pursuing a UC Santa Cruz degree, and deliver programs that help to address disparities in educational experiences. The programs funded by these grants benefit students from all backgrounds, and have been especially valuable for first-generation students who comprise about 32 percent of our undergraduate student body.
Regardless of these federal decisions, we remain committed to supporting all students, making changes that foster academic success, and providing access to hands-on learning opportunities that deepen the student experience and prepare students for their lives and careers as UC Santa Cruz alumni.
Sincerely,
Cindy
