Lawrence Andrews to serve as interim dean of the Arts Division
The appointment begins July 1, 2025. Larry has served as the division’s associate dean of Faculty Affairs since 2019. He joined UC Santa Cruz in 1991.
Dear Campus Community,
I am happy to announce that Professor of Film and Digital Media Lawrence Andrews will serve as interim dean of the Arts Division, effective July 1, 2025.
Larry has served as the division’s associate dean of Faculty Affairs since 2019. He joined UC Santa Cruz in 1991.
His work focuses on non-fiction cinematic modes of production. Larry’s major research projects include ownerbuilt, an animated documentary recounting the experiences of citizens assaulted by police while seeking safe passage across the Danziger Bridge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina; we just telling stories, a documentary film created in collaboration with the Media Project Theater for Incarcerated Women; and Mythic Potentialities, a sonically rich audio essay that explores the subjectivity of Moses Wright, uncle of Emmett Till, through courtroom testimony, family history, and meditations on grief, loss, and personal empowerment.
Larry’s current research marks a radical departure from previous methodologies and takes the form of a small family farm. This project integrates agroecological practices to cultivate a food forest system, creating opportunities to explore novel ecosystems, invasive species, and broader questions of migration, mutualism, and interbeing. His work has been supported by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Rockefeller Foundation, and has been presented at venues including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Third Coast International Audio Festival, and the San Francisco International Film Festival.
I want to thank Dean Celine Parreñas Shimizu for leading the Arts Division with vision, courage, and creativity. We wish her the best in her next chapter as dean of the School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA.
Sincerely,
Lori
