Christina Ravelo named next Vice Provost for Academic Affairs
Ravelo is a Distinguished Professor of Ocean Sciences and is currently serving as the Interim Director of the Institute of Marine Sciences. She has been a member of the UC Santa Cruz faculty since 1992.
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Christina Ravelo as the next Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, effective July 1.
Ravelo is a Distinguished Professor of Ocean Sciences and is currently serving as the Interim Director of the Institute of Marine Sciences. A member of the UC Santa Cruz faculty since 1992, she served as a member of, and also chair of, the Senate Committee on Academic Personnel from 2010 to 2014, as chair of the Ocean Sciences Department from 2016 to 2020, and as the Associate Dean of the Physical and Biological Sciences Division from 2020 to 2023. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to research, teaching, and service, she was promoted to Distinguished Professor in 2020. Her research focuses on environmental change, paleoclimatology, paleoceanography, and the role of the ocean in the carbon cycle and climate change.
Ravelo holds a Ph.D., M.Phil., and M.A. in Geological Sciences from Columbia University, as well as a B.A. in Anthropology and a B.S. in Geology from Stanford University. She is a recipient of the Maurice Ewing Medal from the American Geophysical Union and a Fellow of the California Academy of Sciences.
I would also like to extend my deepest thanks to Herbie Lee for his nearly 15 years of exceptional service as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. His leadership has significantly advanced our efforts in teaching, scholarship, faculty development, and academic equity. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Teaching and Learning Center, developed key diversity and inclusion initiatives, and served as Interim Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor in 2017. I am grateful that he will continue to contribute to the campus community in his new role as Interim Dean of the Division of Social Sciences.
