Part of the University of California, Santa Cruz’s groundbreaking music education is ensuring students have a chance to perform. Throughout winter quarter, students have strived to perfect their sound and their work will culminate in a series of performances through February and March.
The upcoming student performances showcase excellence in performance skill, and provide a unique opportunity to get a first glimpse at the future of music. Some of these concerts will include professional musicians. For example, the UC Santa Cruz Big Band will feature the award winning Bay Area vocalist Nina Causey.
There will also be concerts from outside performers such as New Music Works. As opposed to a student showcase, this show will feature three Professors of Music: Willie Winant, Richard Roper and Amy Beal, the Music Department Chair. This will be a wonderful opportunity for audiences to enjoy the talent of the excellent professional musicians who are part of the Arts Division faculty.
UC Santa Cruz’s dedication to arts excellence, especially in music, is demonstrated through their award winning professors and alumni such as alumna Gillian Welch (Porter ’90, fine arts) who recently made headlines for winning a Grammy for her album, Woodlands. Their international collection of award-winning music professors span genres and pass invaluable knowledge and skills onto their students.
All concerts are held at the Music Center Recital Hall on campus (400 McHenry Road, Santa Cruz, California 95064) and are open to the public. Tickets are free for students and range from $5-$12 for community members. They can be purchased on Eventbrite.
