Dear Slugs,
Welcome to the new academic year at UC Santa Cruz!
Whether you’re starting your first year or returning to UCSC, I wanted to be among the first to welcome you to the new academic year. This is an exciting time—a season of opportunity and fresh beginnings. The energy you all bring to campus is palpable and reminds all of us who teach and work at UCSC why we are here in the first place: to support your growth and learning.
As we enter into the excitement of a new year, it’s important to acknowledge the many challenges impacting the communities we are a part of and from which we come. The current climate—whether shaped by international events or issues close to home—can feel heavy. Yet, these challenges also remind us of the importance of seeing and honoring each other’s humanity, coming together as a campus community, and working collectively toward positive change. And that change can start right here, at UCSC.
Your time here is not only about academic learning but also about growing as individuals and as members of this dynamic campus community. I encourage you to seek out some of the many opportunities beyond the classroom and laboratory—through student organizations, community service, and various campus events. These experiences will enrich your time here and provide you with valuable insights and skills that extend far beyond your coursework.
If you aren’t sure where to start, I encourage you to head to East Upper Field this afternoon to check out Cornucopia. Cornucopia is the largest gathering of Banana Slugs all year and the ultimate opportunity to experience the many ways you can be active and involved in student life at UC Santa Cruz. Come visit with hundreds of student organizations and other campus resources!
You are not alone on this journey. There are staff, faculty and student leaders who are all eager to support you this year and beyond. The Dean of Students Office is available to assist you as well. Whether you are seeking guidance, have concerns, or just want to share your experience as a student, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We are committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.
I look forward to witnessing your many accomplishments this year and seeing how you will contribute to our campus community. You are exactly where you are meant to be and we are a better and more vibrant campus because you are here. Welcome home. Have an amazing year. You’ve got this.
In community,
Garrett Naiman
Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students
