In memoriam – philanthropist and civic leader Rowland Rebele
It saddens me to pass along the news that Rowland Rebele, a longtime Santa Cruz civic leader and philanthropist whose generosity and vision have helped shape modern-day Santa Cruz and our campus, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25.
Dear Faculty and Staff,
It saddens me to pass along the news that Rowland Rebele, a longtime Santa Cruz civic leader and philanthropist whose generosity and vision have helped shape modern-day Santa Cruz and our campus, passed away Saturday, Nov. 25.
His influence on UC Santa Cruz has been broad and deep, both through his philanthropy and leadership. Rowland and his wife, Pat, were active supporters of our campus for more than four decades. Every future artist, social-justice leader, engineer and scientist who passes through our doors will continue to be beneficiaries of Rowland’s generosity, passion and vision.
The couple created the Patricia and Rowland Rebele Endowed Chair in History of Art and Visual Culture and the Rebele Art History Endowment at the University Library. Their generous gift of $1 million allowed campus to jumpstart our Institute of the Arts and Sciences. Their philanthropy extended to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, Arboretum, University Center, Arts & Lectures and many other campus organizations. A story detailing Rowland’s incredible legacy is on our campus newscenter.
My condolences to his wife Pat, children Marianne, Andrew, and Chris, and his many colleagues and friends. Rowland will be missed terribly, but his generosity and compassion for others will ensure his good works and positive influence continue.
Sincerely,
Cindy
