In the wake of numerous, horrific acts of violence that have recently unfolded across the country, UCSC invites students, staff, and faculty to gather together in the Quarry Amphitheater this Thursday, February 2 from noon to 1 p.m.. SlugUnity intends to offer all Banana Slugs the space and opportunity to come together under a shared desire to heal and envision change. In addition to offering connection and reflection activities, lunch will be provided to the first 500 people.

The start of 2023 has been especially troubling and challenging for many. Since January 1, there have been 52 mass shootings–including those in Monterey Park, and nearby campus in Half Moon Bay. So far this year, at least 3,588 people have been killed by gun violence in the United States.

Just last Friday, we were presented with the video of five Memphis police officers brutally, senselessly, and tragically beating Tyre Nichols, who later died of his injuries. Day in and day out we have been met with trying to comprehend one incomprehensible act of violence after another. Vulnerable individuals and communities disproportionately experience acts of violence, and we recognize the need to call out the structural inequities that put them at risk. On an individual level, making sense of one of these happenings is hard enough. Making sense of all of them simultaneously can feel impossible.

We understand the news–and reality of the violent times in which we live–can be overwhelming. We know it’s exhausting. And, we also know that now–more than ever–is a time for unity. Let us come together in community to process our pain, to heal in our collective grief, and to work for a better tomorrow by recommitting ourselves to a more peaceful future. As you are able, we hope you will take a moment to pause and join us in the Quarry Amphitheater Thursday during the noon hour.

In addition to this community healing space, On the Margins will also offer a tabling session next Friday, February 10 at Quarry Plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. During this time, they will distribute wellness kits and social justice and racial justice literature and resources. On the Margins also offers individual student coaching sessions focused on anti-racism, healing, and resiliency practices.

If you are feeling the impact of these or related events, we encourage you to seek out the support and resources that can provide you comfort during this difficult time.
