HSI Team invites campus community to celebrate Hispanic-Serving Institution Week

Dear UCSC Community,

Welcome and hello to all new and returning students, staff, and faculty! We want to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives. Our office is dedicated to support our campus’s racial equity goals to open academic and career pathways for Latinx and low-income students. We focus on being race conscious with the goal of improving our institutional practices and policies to better serve our student community as a whole.

Next week we will celebrate National Hispanic-Serving Institution Week. National Hispanic-Serving Institution week aims to bring awareness to the important roles that HSIs have for improving access to education and advancing equity for traditionally underserved students.

To help us celebrate, we encourage you to follow our Instagram account as we will be launching a social media campaign to highlight the programs and services available to undergraduate and graduate students funded by HSI grants. Have a little fun playing our trivia game while learning more about our HSI identity! We will also be hosting two Instagram Live sessions for you to connect with current students and ask questions prior to moving in (please see our schedule below for more details). Throughout the year we’ll continue to post about upcoming events, academic programs, and various campus resources including internship opportunities. We also encourage you to check out our website to learn more about our team and HSI efforts.

Lastly, I would like to highlight one of our key campus partners and their upcoming welcome event,  La Bienvenida: New Student Welcome, taking place on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 1:00-3:00pm at the Quarry Amphitheater. This new student welcome event is hosted by the Chicanx Latinx Resource Center, better known as El Centro. The purpose of this event is to introduce and connect students to El Centro, a variety of Chicanx and Latinx student organizations, and campus resources. Free food, community building, music, and student performances are part of the evening's fun! All students, staff, and faculty are welcome.

We invite you to get plugged in and expand your network! Our HSI Initiatives staff, Leadership Committee, campus partners, and collaborators are all excited to meet and get to know you at one of our upcoming events or programs.

Hasta Pronto!
