Road repairs on Red Hill Road

To: UCSC Community

From:  Marc Douvia, PPDO / Design & Construction Services – Work Management

Construction crews will begin road maintenance work Monday, July 18, on Red Hill Road between the Biomedical Sciences and Interdisciplinary Sciences Buildings (ISB), with an expected completion date of Friday, August 5.  Work will include:  removing and replacing approximately four inches of the existing roadway, reconstruction of the underlying pavement structure via a method known as Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR), and replacing the existing asphalt curb on the east side of Red Hill Road with concrete curb and gutter.  Project information and access restrictions to be imposed by this project are highlighted below:

  • Temporary traffic control signs will be in place along the work area.
  • Access through the work area for emergency services (police, fire, medical) will be maintained at all times.
  • Limited access through the work area will be possible Monday, July 18th, and Tuesday, July 19th; drivers should expect traffic delays up to ten minutes.
  • Demolition activities begin Wednesday, July 20th; traffic may still be permitted through the work area, expect traffic delays of up to twenty minutes.
  • Beginning Thursday, July 21st, through Tuesday, August 2nd, there will be a full road closure (no access for vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians) to allow for road repair activities; access through the work area for emergency services traffic will be possible during these dates.
  • The Biomedical Sciences Building’s loading dock will remain accessible throughout the project.  However, at times there will be construction traffic near and at the loading dock; therefore, recommend minimizing use of this loading dock as much as possible during the project dates.
  • ISB’s and Earth & Marine Sciences Building’s loading docks will not be accessible during the full road closure (July 21st through August 2nd).
  • ADA parking spaces along Red Hill Road will be taken out of service for the duration of the project (July 18th through August 5th); please contact TAPS or the UCSC Project Manager (Marc Douvia) to request and coordinate appropriate accommodations.
  • There will be work crews and equipment causing dust, noise and odor related to this work throughout the project; please take appropriate precautions as necessary (NOTE:  Nearby building air intakes should not be affected by this project).

Finally, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians are urged to avoid the project corridor for the entire project.

We thank everyone in advance for their cooperation and patience as we make much-needed repairs to this section of Red Hill Road.
