Today is a momentous day for UC Santa Cruz and for our extended campus community. I am thrilled and honored to announce that College Ten will be named John R. Lewis College. The naming was announced just a few minutes ago during a virtual event, with students, faculty, staff, campus leaders and special guests gathered both on our campus and at the University of California’s Washington Center in the District of Columbia.
Representative Lewis was a civil rights icon, a leader in this country’s historic and continuing struggle for freedom, equality, democracy, and basic human rights for all. He was an organizer whose bravery and conviction helped pave the way for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He later served 30-plus years in the House of Representatives, where he became known as the “conscience of Congress” for his commitment to justice and equity.
While Representative Lewis represented Atlanta in Congress, his constituency always included the disadvantaged and the disenfranchised, regardless of where they called home. UC Santa Cruz, with our mission to provide access and opportunity to all, strives to honor Representative Lewis’ legacy through educational experiences with transformative power that give our students the tools they need to change their own lives and to change the world.
Our residential colleges are an important component of the UC Santa Cruz student experience. Each of our 10 colleges is a hub of intellectual and social engagement — a unique living and learning environment that provides a platform for engaging in a large research institution. College Ten is our youngest and one of our most diverse colleges. Of its roughly 1,500 undergraduates, more than 60 percent grew up speaking another language either in addition to or instead of English, and more than 30 percent are first-generation students, the first in their family to attend college. College Ten is home to a series of robust programs designed to realize its founding themes of Social Justice and Community, all aimed at empowering students to create positive change. It is a fitting choice for College Ten to become John R. Lewis College.
We are humbled by this naming, and excited for the next steps in this journey. An endowment, pledged by a private donor and longtime supporter of UC Santa Cruz, will fund programming, courses, experiential opportunities, and initiatives that will carry social-justice ideals forward generation after generation. While we are announcing this naming today, we will officially change the name of the physical spaces on campus this coming spring, when we will host an official dedication that I hope all of you will join us for. Between now and that dedication, the college and university will begin the development of programming that will highlight and advance the work of Rep. Lewis.
There are many people and organizations who helped make this moment possible. I would like to thank the John R. Lewis Trust, represented by Michael Collins, Rep. Lewis’ longtime chief of staff and current senior adviser to Vice President Kamala Harris. Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, Rep. Jimmy Panetta, University of California President Michael V. Drake, and the Rev. Dwight Andrews also helped advance our proposal. I am also deeply grateful for the extraordinary donor behind this naming, whose continued, selfless acts of philanthropy demonstrate to us how to advance vital and just causes in meaningful ways with kindness, humility, and joy.
John Lewis did immense good in his lifetime, demonstrating the remarkable difference just one person can make. A college in his name is a profound honor and a great responsibility for UC Santa Cruz. Our campus community will strive daily to live up to the legacy of Representative Lewis, to answer his call to create a more just and fair society, and to leave the world a better place than we found it.

Una dotación, prometida por un donante privado y patrocinador de la UC Santa Cruz desde mucho tiempo atrás, subvencionará cursos de programación, oportunidades para adquirir experiencia, e iniciativas que llevarán adelante ideales de justicia social, generación tras generación. Mientras anunciemos este nombramiento hoy, estaremos cambiando oficialmente el nombre de los espacios físicos en el campus para la primavera entrante, cuando seremos sede de una dedicación oficial a la que espero que todos Uds. nos acompañen.
