KZSC (88.1 FM) will participate in California Public Radio Day, which is meant to create awareness for the vital public service public radio brings to communities.

KZSC is joined in the campaign by student-run radio stations at UC Davis, UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, and San Jose City College together with National Public Radio and Pacifica Radio network stations from across California. The campaign encourages listeners to support their local non-commercial, educational radio stations with their donations and to “Listen Local.”

“This past year has underlined the importance of access to trustworthy public media for everyone in our communities," the participating stations said in a joint statement. " In the midst of unprecedented challenges, public radio stations across the state stand together united for what connects us. Whether it’s the importance of information, or the power of music, we believe in public radio’s ability to uplift voices of the community, to entertain, educate, inform, and inspire, and so do our listeners. From timely and localized reporting on fires to shining a light on our communities, public radio is essential.”

Highlighting KZSC’s commitment to localism and educational radio, John Malkin’s Transformation Highway program will interview the Chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, Valentin Lopez, at noon.

Chairman Lopez will speak about the El Camino Real Bell Removal Ceremony taking place on Saturday, August 28 at Mission Plaza Park in Santa Cruz. The work of the Amah Mutsun Land Trust and efforts to establish Critical Mission Studies programs at the University of California will also be highlighted.  People can listen locally at 88.1 FM and at at noon on California Public Radio Day.

KZSC is a noncommercial, educational, community radio station and student-run organization at UC Santa Cruz.
