Registration opens today for newly admitted students to start their UC Santa Cruz experience this summer. All incoming slugs are invited to join Summer Edge, an early start program designed to jumpstart their academic careers by taking courses remotely before their first fall. Edge students can fulfill prerequisites, degree requirements, or jump into major coursework. They also receive an exclusive 25% discount on per-credit summer tuition.
Starting early can open up time in an academic plan for an internship, research with faculty, study abroad, or even graduating early. Financial Aid is available for eligible students taking a minimum of seven credits. There are additional savings for out-of-state students who pay the same tuition rate as California residents over the summer.
Last year, 908 Edge students completed 7,867 credits, said Summer Session Director Monica Parikh.
“We develop the recommended course lists with academic advisors so our students have clear guidance on what to take,” Parikh said. “And with $4,000-$5,000 in grant aid for each eligible student, UCSC is making this early start doable for new Slugs around the world.”
In addition to earning credits, students receive support from staff and peer mentors through workshops and one-on-one sessions. There is also a diverse set of virtual social events where they can make friends before the school year begins!
