UC Santa Cruz this fall will welcome a new cohort of postdoctoral scholars under an expanded and enhanced Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program.
The program provides support to excellent postdoctoral scholars who applied and ranked very highly but were not selected by the University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.
The systemwide program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. The current program offers postdoctoral research fellowships, professional development and faculty mentoring to outstanding scholars in all fields whose research, teaching, and service will contribute to diversity and equal opportunity at UC.
Nearly 75 percent of UC President's Postdoctoral Fellows have received tenure track faculty appointments. Since 2003, more than 100 former fellows have received faculty appointments at University of California campuses.
Starting this fall, UCSC will fund two types of Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program awards: one that is fully funded, and one that is awarded without salary for those who have secured an alternative source of postdoctoral funding. Awards may be for up to two years in residence at UC Santa Cruz.
“This program helps UC Santa Cruz support emerging scholars--especially those who are underrepresented in the faculty ranks--who are poised to have long and successful careers in academia, and whose work contributes to diversity, equity, and inclusion on UC campuses and across the country,” said Campus Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Lori Kletzer.
In addition to fully funding up to two Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowships, UC Santa Cruz also sponsors awards for highly-ranked PPFP finalists who obtain funding from other sources. These additional Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellowships (CPF) provide $5,000 in research/travel funds. All Fellows, regardless of whether they are appointed with or without salary, participate in the President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PPFP) professional development activities.
Candidates for the UC Santa Cruz CPF must follow the same application procedures as candidates for the University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship program.
